Create location response questions

Learn how to create location response questions via the web app and the mobile app.

Why use location response questions?

Location response questions help you capture location details, like where an inspection took place, where an issue was found, or where a task needs to be done. They're especially useful for logging store visits, confirming site presence, documenting asset locations, tracking issues in certain areas, or noting where hazards were identified. Location responses help save time, reduce manual input, and ensure that every inspection is linked to the right location.

There are two types of location response fields you can add to your template:

  • Inspection location: This field automatically captures the address and coordinates based on your device's location. If the inspection is linked to an asset, this can also help update the asset's location alongside any available telematics data.

  • Location: This field lets you manually add a location, whether by typing an address, pinning your location on the map, or clicking Location iconLocate me.

Accurate location data helps make records reliable. You can view where each response was submitted to help confirm that the inspection took place at the expected location, making it easier to verify reports and follow audits.

Location services must be turned on for SafetyCulture to automatically populate the inspection location field.

Create a location response question

  1. Log in to the web app.

  2. Select Templates iconTemplates from the menu on the left-hand side.

  3. Click a template and select Edit template in the side panel.

  4. Add a new question or select an existing one.

  5. Click Expand more icon under the "Type of response" column on the right-hand side and select Location pin (filled) iconLocation. If you're on the title page, you can also select Location pin (filled) iconInspection location.

  6. Click Publish on the upper-right of the page to publish the template. If you're not ready to publish the template, you can go back to the template list and publish the changes when you're ready.

  1. Open the mobile app.

  2. Tap Inspections icon mobileInspections at the bottom of your screen.

  3. Select Templates tab at the top of your screen.

  4. Tap a template and select Pencil iconEdit template from the pop-up options.

  5. Add a new question or select an existing one.

  6. Tap Expand more icon below the question label and select Location pin (filled) iconLocation. If you're on the title page, you can also select Location pin (filled) iconInspection location.

  7. Tap Publish on the upper-right of the screen to publish the template. If you're not ready to publish the template, you can go back to the template list and publish the changes when you're ready.

Published changes made to templates only apply to new inspections moving forward.

Frequently asked questions

If the inspection location field isn't automatically populated, you likely haven't turned on all the required location settings. To fix this, make sure to turn on the following:

  • Desktop: Location services on both your computer and browser

  • Mobile: Location services on both your device and the SafetyCulture app
